The American Hazelnut or American Filbert is easy to grow and starts bearing nuts in 1 to 3 years after planting. It grows in the wild throughout the U.S. and is a favorite of wildlife such as deer, turkey, and squirrels. The American Hazelnut is also a favorite of cooks because of its sweet flavor. It can be used in a variety of ways in the kitchen. You can eat it straight out of the shell, roasted, ground into flour, or made it into butter.
